Dear Rem’e,
I’m sorry not to have written sooner. Though you seem a decent person, it made me nervous when you ran afoul of the law last month. I hope you understand that I could not jeopardize my livelihood by associating with accused criminals who openly fought the constabulary in the streets. However, that all seems to be in the past now, so I hope you will call on me if you return to Amber.
I do not write simply to invite you to visit. I am writing to warn you of danger. Some men stayed here at the Pipe and Pint last week. They claimed to be prospectors on the way to Basilisk Bluff. That isn’t unusual, but if they were prospectors then I’m a hobgoblin. They had a cruel look to them, and one of them broke Turlu’s arm (that’s the daytime barkeep) over some perceived slight on the morning they left. He stole the wedding ring right off of his finger! It is a gold band set with a diamond and is a family heirloom. I gathered my courage and followed them to the gates when they left; they had lots of tools for killing and none for digging.
I’ve been talking to the girls from the other establishments, and some have reported seeing similar strangers passing through. When we told the Constable he didn’t seem too concerned, but I think he is stretched thin already and doesn’t need to look for problems outside the walls.
I hope you don’t think me foolish for following those men. Please be safe and wary. I should be glad to receive a visit from you upon your return, all the more so if you are whole and unharmed.
Cordially,
Kaino
